Social stories were developed by Carol Gray in 1991. As an educational tool, it is designed to help children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) develop social skills and ever since its inception is ever-evolving and constantly enriched. In the context of this master's thesis, we present an alternative approach to the traditional educational tool of social stories.
The developed social stories have the following features:
1. They are digital 2. They come in comic form 3. They are interactive (via the technique of branching narratives) 4. They focus on the use of consequence sentences
The developed educational tool of interactive social stories aims to teach social skills to children with ASD. The acquisition and generalization of these skills were evaluated via assessment techniques in various stages of the implementation. The educational tool was tested in the primary school setting with the help of special educators that were assigned to teach two children with ASD. For the design of the tool, we utilized educational data about the student’s social skills profile. These data were gathered during interviews with the special educators and involved information about critical social instances in the children’s social life.
This paper aims to highlight the value of interactive social stories as an educational tool as well as to promote the tool’s evolution in multiple dimensions. The current study also aims to delineate the use of good practices in the education of children with ASD in regard to learning social skills and proper social behaviors.
