Main goals of economic policies is to achieve high rates of economic growth and to ensure economic prosperity in a country.
Many theories have been developed on how foreign trade and institutions affect a country's economic prosperity. There are also numerous studies on how foreign trade is linked to institutions. The aim of this work is: i) to investigate whether and how institutions and the outside world influence economic prosperity and ii) how and if they are interconnected.
Special mention is made in our country regarding the examination of the above. Both for the recent years covering the period 2002-2020, but also for a longer time period pertaining the years 1961-2020, based on the available statistical data.
The project is structured in three parts. In the first part, we analyze the concept of institutions and the institutional deficit with special reference to Greece. In the second part, we study the theories of foreign trade. First we fully analyze its concept on the basis of macroeconomic theory. Then we present scientific research and studies on the relationship of foreign trade with institutions and these two with economic prosperity and economic growth. The third and last part of this work, composes our empirical research which is econometric and it has been carried out with the program E-views and Microsoft Excel. With this research, we address the aforementioned questions related to foreign trade, institutions and economic prosperity. We use the method of linear regression to determine the correlation between them, and the method of Granger causality to check if there is a causal relationship between them. That is, if changes in one parameter cause changes in the other.
