The energy sector has been a regulator of the economic and social policies of many countries, as well as many international organizations, such as the European Union and the United Nations. This is because energy issues affect both the development of the economic process and the increasing state power. The importance of energy resources, as well as their proper exploitation, lies in the existence of a series of problems and concerns, such as the old, perpetual competition in areas such as the Eastern Mediterranean, security issues such as those arising in Eurasia or even issues whether or not prices are restrained by supplier states.
The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the energy sector through the elaboration of a specific case study, The Republic of Cyprus, and the energy developments concerning this state. More specifically, we will examine the energy security of Cyprus and how it is shaped given its current energy dependence on third countries, but also the prospects for the exploitation of its own deposits. Unresolved political issues does not allow the run energy processes. As for the latter, the shaping of the international political scene is a decisive factor, as decisions on such issues are left to both the national or private companies undertaking the extraction of the deposits and the countries they represent.
