Education provides knowledge and skills while in parallel imparts values and can be used to shape
ideologies. The interference of the state on education can be part of an effort to secularize and to
contain the role of religion on education but it can also be used in the other direction, the one where
it supports the role of religion in society. In the Turkish Republic, depending on the political
circumstances, education was instrumentalized to support both directions. A typical example of such
an instrumentalization is the role of Gülen movement through their school network. From 2002
onwards, the Islamic government which monopolizes the political life of Turkey, and the Gülen
movement were acting as companions opposite the secular system of the country, with the
main endeavour to restrict the role of the Kemalists in the political affairs of the country until the
steady deterioration of their relation due to disagreement in various scopes. The pinnacle of this
conflict was the accusations on behalf of the Islamic government to the movement for the failed coup attempt on the 15th July of 2016. The goal of the hereto dissertation is to probe the fallout of
the conflict between the Islamic government and the Gülen movement on the worldwide school
network of the movement and the cause of the conflict.
