The packaging first appeared many years ago and since then, it has undergone multiple modifications to be not only attractive for the customer, but -at the same time- also environmentally friendly. The choice of suitable packaging is based on overall criteria relating to quality, increased product life, usability and functionality, low cost, as well as the possibility of recycling and reuse.
In this paper, the importance and role of packaging for a product will be extensively analyzed and the different types of packaging will be presented. In the second chapter, we will discuss the new trends in the food and pharmaceutical industry, through "smart" packaging, for quality control and "active" packaging, by modifying the preservation conditions and improving the organoleptic characteristics of the product. The third chapter then examines the relationship between the environment and packaging, in the context of strengthening consumers' ecological awareness and corporate social responsibility. Finally, the fourth chapter presents the concept of packaging as a marketing tool and its correlation with consumer behavior.
