This study examines the effect of colonization on the sustainability ranking of both
European colonialists and their former colonies and protectorates. By using quantitative
data an attempt is made to link colonialism as a historical event with sustainable
development. Particular attention is given to clustering the countries sharing the
common historical experience of being colonies of the same colonialist. Such a
clustering approach allows to explicitly take into account the history of a country as an
integral pillar for its sustainable development as being reflected in the 17 Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN). The main finding is that a
country’s experience as a colony or as a protectorate during the 20th century influences
its path towards sustainable development. In particular, the statistical analysis carried
out shows that colonialists achieve better results concerning the variables examined
than their former colonies and protectorates. The purpose of this study is to help former
colonies interpret their current situation regarding sustainability, having in mind the
influence exerted on them by their recent historical past as colonies or as protectorates.
