Introduction: The quality of education is an issue of concern for parents of students, for educational community and for persons’ who are responsible for educational policy making which leads to reforms in Greece and worldwide.
Aim: Assessment of parents’ satisfaction/dissatisfaction about education and especially about school unit, teachers’ and educational system. Measurement of parents’ satisfaction/dissatisfaction about education and about school unit, about the role of the school in education and about organization and administration of school units. In addition, investigation of relationship between parents’ satisfaction/ dissatisfaction and the evaluation of teachers and schools and their willingness to accept alternative forms of education promoted internationally. In addition, the aim of this study is to find out the determinants of parent’s satisfaction.
Methods: A cross-sectional study with a convenience sample was conducted among 146 parents with children in primary or secondary school. The outcome was the satisfaction of parents from educational system.
Results: Greater parents’ satisfaction associated to greater agreement that evaluation of school unit and better organization and administration of school unit improves school quality (p<0,05). Higher parents’ educational level associated to better satisfaction from school and better willingness to transfer the child to a school away from home (p<0,05). Increased parents’ and children involvement in school decision making associated to better satisfaction from school and teachers (p<0,05). Finally, increased confidence in the educational system associated to greater agreement that schools get above the educational targets (according to the criteria of sustainability school), with this relationship being statistically significant (p<0,001).
Conclusion: Involvement of parents’ in their children school life and educational targets related to educational targets of 21st century and to sustainability education are factors that affect parents’ satisfaction about educational system and quality of education. Educational policy makers have to consider the factors which affects parental school satisfaction in order to adopt measures and strategies that will increase school’s quality and effectiveness and consequently parents’, students’ and teachers’ satisfaction, promoting the sustainable school as the most appropriate framework.
