Transport infrastructures are crucial for any modern development model, because they contribute to reduce distances and facilitate economic activity. With a view to infrastructures sustainability as well as tackling environmental challenges, reconfiguration of their function is necessary. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate environmental impacts of airports, to determine effective ways of addressing these negative repercussions and to evaluate financially the implementation of these practices through a case study. High noise levels, that aircrafts and related functions of airports produce and the degradation of the air quality because of pollutant emissions belong to the main environmental impacts. Additionally, management teams of airports have to address challenges such as energy, water resources and wildlife management. The environmental footprint of airports can be reduced through a framework of effective measures, which at the same time ca contribute to the financial sustainability and enhancement of social responsibility of airports. The research concludes that the implementation of an off-grid photovoltaic system is an economically viable solution and opens up the way for the adoption of measures related to airports switch to sustainability.
