Nowadays, schools face various challenges, obligations and dangers on a daily basis that can be characterized as heterogeneous, complicated and continuous. Consequently, in order to run smoothly and effectively and for its members to be treated equally within the working environment towards a path of development, schools need a leader; an entrepreneurial leader. Such headmasters/leaders act utilizing techniques and strategies of entrepreneurship, driven by its culture and mentality. Their job is to apply those features in the school environment so as to benefit the school unit by helping to achieve the goals set in it.
This paper aims to study whether and to what extent this form of leadership exists in secondary schools in Greece, taking into account also the relatively small number of studies on this very subject. For this purpose, a quantitative survey is conducted using questionnaires that are distributed to professors so as to state their own view on the matter and, at the same time, the headmasters’ opinion is recorded via interviews.
When combining and analyzing the data, one comes up with some rather encouraging results and conclusions. First of all, new headmasters are qualified when it comes to school administration. They tend to think as entrepreneurs and consequently they are most likely to choose methods and approaches of the so-called entrepreneurial leadership. More specifically, some of the findings indicate that they are open to new ideas and proposals while urging their subordinates to receive training on new, contemporary techniques. Additionally, they communicate with everyone involved in the educational process and collaborate harmoniously with all the necessary parties. Last but not least, they respect and appreciate the professors of their school unit, promoting an inclusive approach in decision-making processes, a fact that contributes to the good relationship between the members of the school. Undoubtedly, those are features of entrepreneurial leaders. Today, headmasters in secondary education in Greece seem to have incorporated them to their skill set, a fact confirmed also by bibliography.
