Since the early 1990’s, Greece has been transformed from an emigration to an immigration country. This is an important population change with many socio-economic and demographic implications. Theses changes have been the result of fundamental political and economic reforms across the whole world, as well as of demographic and economic developments within Greece. The first officially available data on migrants in Greece – citizenship, age - sex composition, employment, educational level, marital status etc – has been extracted from the 2001 population census. This paper focuses on the sub-national distribution of immigrants in Greece. It specifically examines the regions that appear to be more attractive or not, the regional migrant distribution and their destination criteria. It also examines the settlement patterns of four major nationalities coming from Albania (which represents the 57% of all immigrants), from Bulgaria, Georgia and from Romania.
