In the ever-changing economic and social environment, where all the Member States of the European Union are part of a multinational network, the knowledge and usage of foreign languages is essential. This is the reason that majority of European Curriculum in Primary and Secondary Education levels include the teaching of at least two Foreign Languages in their curriculum. However, the need of learning foreign languages after finishing the Primary and Secondary Education emerges as a necessity for professional evolution or simply as an intuitive decision of the individual as a European citizen. The purpose of this thesis is to examine and analyze the preferences of adults regarding the choice of the foreign language they want to learn, based on their professional needs and the level of foreign languages they already know.
Τhis thesis was an attempt to explore adults' preferences of foreign language through a quantitative questionnaire survey. The thesis consists of two main parts. In the first part of the work a theoretical study of the bibliography on adult education, the importance of foreign languages and their learning. In the second part there is an analysis of the purpose of the survey, the questionnaire and the results of the survey based on the sample responses. Finally, conclusions are drawn based on the analysis of the answers given and topics of further research identified are also presented.
