On a global scale, our society is in urgent need of people who, by working together, are capable of solving complex problems in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and are ready to deal with the great challenges of the 21st century. The society globally has an urgent need of people who work together to solve problems in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and are ready to deal with the great challenges of the 21st century.
In this way, collaborative problem solving (CPS) is one of the key skills required in our time. The educational system was tested during the period of the mandatory quarantine due to the Covid-19 pandemic as it changed dramatically, and the rise of e-learning arose during which teaching is carried out remotely and on digital platforms. Teachers had to adapt to the new reality that created challenges in promoting collaborative learning and cultivating 21st century skills in an environment that was constantly and unexpectedly alternating between face-to-face and distance learning in the 2020-2021 academic year.
The current research attempts to enhance collaborative learning in distance education by cultivating collaborative problem-solving skills in 4th grade students in primary school in the context of the interdisciplinary course of Environmental Education. For the purposes of the research, an educational intervention of STEAM activities was developed, based on Problem Based Learning, which follows the CPS procedures. It examines awareness in collaborative problem solving and at the same time explores students' attitudes about collaborative learning in online environments. This study aims to identify possible factors that affect the use of CPS skills in students' attitudes towards collaborative learning in the environment of the WebEx Meetings platform which was used to implement it.
The results, as obtained from questionnaires and evaluations, confirm the positive effect of this educational experience on CPS awareness and the emergence of social skills behaviors in students at that time. At the same time, the research findings did not show a correlation between the awareness of CPS and the positive attitudes of students, but a significant positive correlation was observed between positive attitudes and the dimensions of Social CPS skills (Participation, Perspective Talking and Social regulation).
