In the last decade, a relatively new category of fabrication techniques, the methods of Additive Manufacturing or 3D Printing, has intensified its presence and dynamics. This particular family of methods seems to be attracting the interest of people involved in board games, as amateurs and professionals are open to new ways of producing figures. The key features of additive manufacturing that seem to make it a good choice for the production of models for board games are its digital character, the relative speed of fabrication and the ability to produce complex geometric shapes. The additive manufacturing field, however, includes many different methods, which differ considerably in terms of technological maturity, characteristics and capabilities. The choice, therefore, of a method for the specific application is not something simple, as the positive and negative characteristics of each technique must be evaluated, having as basic criteria the cost, the quality and the speed of construction. This brings us to the following question: whether and to what extent a 3D printing method can be used in the production of small size models instead of the standard injection molding method. These two questions, which additive manufacturing / 3D Printing technology would be most appropriate for the production of board game models and whether the chosen method can replace standard production methods, are the main contents of this study.
