Visual Novels, a digital entertainment genre combining features of both videogames and books, originated in Japan, where the first title was released in 1983. Since then, with the evolution of their dedicated development tools, Visual Novels have been greatly improved in terms of presentation and ease of use. However, there is still no recorded attempt to create one with Visual Studio as the development tool. This dissertation is divided into two parts. The first part, through a historical review of the genre and presentation of a few contemporary titles, is a study of the Visual Novels’ genre characteristics, along with some modifications and improvements these have undergone over the years. The second part, presents the design direction and the ‘user’s manual’ for the Visual Novel entitled: 'An Unsolved Case', as well as a detailed record of its experimental development process with the Visual Studio suite using Windows Forms, along with corresponding presentation of images and code snippets. The final chapters, present various future extensions that will be incorporated into the application, as well as an excerpt from the original novel text, along with any narrative changes it has undergone during its adaptation to the new medium, as a sample of the development cycle. For the in-text citations and reference list, the APA format was used.
