This paper attempts to analyze the role of brokers in the supply chain as well as the consequences of technology penetration in the ship broking industry. It is clear that even though brokers are the main information providers in shipping, they are at risk of being bypassed or even eliminated from the supply chain by the introduction of new technologies in the industry that seek to replace the role of brokers. However, the particular characteristics of the industry and the nature of the work of brokers, as well as the lag of shipping companies in adopting new technologies, create special conditions. For the purpose of this paper interviews were conducted with brokers and chartering managers of shipping companies. From these interviews it was confirmed that digitizing the work of brokers is a threat but can also be in the long run and by using appropriate actions a unique opportunity for the development of the profession and the renewal of an industry that still uses outdated tactics.
