The purpose of this thesis is to create and validate a new, technologically supported, didactic approach for the development of business opportunity recognition skills in Secondary Education students.
Business opportunity recognition is a cognitive process. It consists of distinct phases that someone follows, to identify and evaluate a particular idea as an opportunity to start a successful business. It is a skill that can be developed like any other skill and entrepreneurial education (Ε.Ε.) is the ideal means to achieve it. The demands of the rapidly changing economic environment and the needs of the new generation of students form the framework within which Ε.Ε. is called to develop modern pedagogical approaches, with emphasis on experiential learning and practice. An Ε.Ε. program for secondary school students should promote the development of skills and attitudes, expecting that regardless of career choice, graduates will develop, evaluate and use them in different contexts, as students, employees or citizens, gaining an entrepreneurial spirit that will enable them to face challenges as opportunities.
This thesis proposes a didactic approach to Ε.Ε. that (a) implements a method of measuring the entrepreneurial readiness of Secondary Education students, in order to create alternative scenarios / learning paths, (b) includes supportive learning material to close students' knowledge gaps on entrepreneurship (c) provides guided practice of business opportunity recognition through critical reflection; (d) is supported by educational technologies and (e) associates each of its individual activities with the two international frameworks of entrepreneurial competencies, EntreComp and NCSEE.
The proposed didactic approach is tailored for secondary education, since at this stage E.E. should not be solely viewed as how to start a business, which seems to be a challenging issue for the majority of school children. The approach focuses on how students develop increasing autonomy and responsibility (according EntreComp) while mastering the core entrepreneurial skill of business opportunity recognition, alongside with the basics of economy (according NCSEE) and competencies such as problem-solving, risk assessment, creativity. The special outcome of E.E. at this stage is motivation and empowerment of students with an entrepreneurial mindset that can serve them regardless of career path.
The orchestration of the learning activities of the proposed didactic approach, in a technologically supported learning environment, enables the students of secondary education, according to their identified initial readiness, to acquire the needed knowledge and skills in order to perform subsequently four distinct groups of activities related to a given business idea. Students combine field research and bibliographic study to detect market needs and trends in a thematic field, investigate about potential competitors, analyze data on the financial viability of the business idea and create its business model. By applying problem-solving principles in an inquiry-based and collaborative learning environment, students develop business opportunity recognition skills.
The proposed didactic approach was implemented in two pilot studies, in a large sample of students, in authentic school environments of Secondary Education. Systematic evaluation was conducted after each implementation, in order to investigate the learning effectiveness and acceptability of the approach. The findings served to make methodological improvements to the didactic approach. Its final form now constitutes a new, modern, complete, validated didactic proposal, available for implementation in real educational settings, aiming at developing business opportunity recognition skills of Secondary Education students.
