Piracy is still one of the most important threats a ship has to face during its voyage, with pirate attacks having been increased significantly in recent years. The reappearance of piracy to such an extent makes finding ways to tackle it particularly imperative for modern shipping as a whole, as well as shaping insurance policies to provide adequate coverage of such risks.
The purpose of this Diploma Thesis is through the outline of the concept of marine insurance, its object, the risks covered and those excluded, to make a more extensive analysis of piracy as a covered insurance risk, but also the forms through which it is usually appeared and is differentiated from other related concepts, using similar case law examples for that reason.
Furthermore, there is a need to mention the possibilities of insurance coverage offered for adequate shielding against the risk of piracy and the wider legal framework - Greek and international - provided to combat it.
