Abstract
The present study attempts to investigate the highly controversial issue of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Extensive reference is made to the benefits and effects of using and consuming such foods, as well as to the problems they may cause. Also, the legal framework concerning GMOs is recorded and analyzed, both in Greece and in the European Union. Several years ago, in order to solve the ever-increasing problems in human nutrition, genetic modification techniques began to be developed in America, with the result that a large percentage of the food we consume is now genetically modified food (GMT) or, in other words, " mutated ". The global genetically modified food industry claims that genetically modified foods are safe. However, there are not a few who disagree and claim that the necessary experimental studies have not been done for their possible long-term effects on health. For the research that followed, it was necessary to collect a lot of material, which comes mainly from scientific publications in international journals, from the website of the European Union and from the World Trade Organization (WTO). The structure of the study is as follows: First, there is a report on when the use of GTT started and how it reached Europe and Greece. The following is information on the legislation governing GMOs in the US, the European Union (EU) and Greece.
Furthermore, a comparison of the existing laws in these legal orders is made while the reasons for the different treatment of FTAs in the USA and the EU are investigated. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of using this type of food are analyzed. Emphasis is placed on the problems that GTTs may cause in the human body.
