Concerns have been growing in recent years about the dimensions of the phenomenon of
international terrorism, and in particular the acts of terrorism by extremist Islamic groups.
Recent terrorist attacks in western countries have made it imperative to interpret and
understand the phenomenon of terrorism in order to limit and if possible to prevent such
actions in the future. Within this context, the present study attempts to provide an overview,
starting from the different interpretative approaches to the concept and the phenomenon of
terrorism, as an intermediate stop the examination of Islamic fundamentalism and its
relation to terrorism and as final destination the understanding of the possible causes of
terrorism.
