A brand name is a business’s most valuable intangible asset. Once registered, it is considered a legal right for its beneficiary, who has the option of its exclusive use, disposal and transfer. At the same time, it becomes the “identity” of the product, thus preventing the confusion of the consumers, while enhancing innovation and entrepreneurship. Pharmaceutical companies heavily invest in the commercial labeling of their products as this will promote sales and the firm’s reputation. Furthermore, a well-chosen pharmaceutical brand name helps preventing errors due to similarity of drug names, thus ensuring the protection of public health. Pharmaceutical companies emphasize on both the naming process of their products and their registration. The present study aims to record and analyze data concerning the current state of registration of commercial brands of pharmaceuticals - on patent and generics - in Greece. Results showed that the largest percentage of pharmaceutical brands is in an active secured state and use, indicative of the capacity of the pharmaceutical industry, and especially of the production of generic drugs, in our country.
