The current global developments of health system in public and private hospitals create the need for continuing education of health care professionals with the aim of ensuring high quality health care. Due to the continuing increasing demand for education, as well as also the development of health services, the assessment and evaluation of educational needs become necessary including the limited financial resources.
The aim of the present study is the identification and evaluation of the educational needs of health care professionals both in public and private hospitals in Greece, with main shafts the performance, the prioritization of needs and their professional development, as well as a more efficient scheduling and planning training.
The present study was conducted in four public and three private hospitals during the period from 15/04/2017 to 30/08/2017. The valid, reliable and psychometric questionnaire of Hennessy-Hicks (1996) «Training Needs Analysis Questionnaire» was distributed, in its translated version in Greek. The number of employees taking part in the survey amounted of 453 people, which were randomly selected and belong to all departments and clinics of the nursing institutions. For the identification of training needs unrelated t-test and multivariate linear analysis was used.
The questionnaire presented excellent reliability, as all internal reliability ratings Cronbach’s alpha was between 0.7 and 0.95, except from the category “administration” due to the three single items in this category.
The health care professionals reported statistically significant relationship between training needs and almost 30 items of the questionnaire.
In addition, according to the results of the survey, it was observed that for the half of the items, the organizational development considered more important than skills. The majority, belongs in the category of research/audit, where health care professionals believe that the organizational development will bring about greater improvement in their training needs .
With regard to training needs and sex, it was observed that women and men generally had the same training needs. It should be noted that the 70% of the participants were women. Moreover, it was observed that health care professionals who are employed in the public sector presented statistically significant training needs for eight items, in relation to the private sector, for which four in the category of research/audit and three in the category of clinical tasks.
Finally, according to the results of the study, 265 out of 453 health care professionals do not have any published work in Greek or in foreign-language journal.
The survey showed that heath care professionals need further education with particular emphasis on the category of research/audit. This is due to the fact that there may not be any connection between research and clinical practice capacity.
In addition, health managers could use these results, that will respond exclusively to the particular training needs of health care professionals.
Since the training needs are recognized and prioritized, the programs could be more targeted and more efficient in order to improve the quality of health services, taking into consideration and the limited training budget.
