The health sector is one of the most sensitive and complicated sectors of the financial life of a country. A high-quality level of public health shows signs of prosperity, growth but simultaneously requires a high level of consumption of the available resources in a country's the health care system. In a health care system, productivity and health care expenses are directly correlated and this relationship is well-documented by various researches and studies carried out by the World Health Organization, whilst the countries that possess a good economic state protect and promote the health sector in order to protect their people. The aim of this master thesis is to investigate the behavior of health expenses in the Latin American countries and more specifically of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Chile correlated with some of the most basic macroeconomic variables. The data researched for this particular study are the population characteristics, trends, situation, mortality rates, critical health problems and illnesses, chronic situations and illnesses due to external causes and finally the health condition during lifetime. During the last decade, Latin America has shown great progress in the health sector, including its success on various goals in the context of Millennium Developmental Goals. On the other hand, in order for the health sector to be upgraded and for the productivity to rise, there are still a lot of changes that need to be done.
