The purpose of this postgraduate thesis is to examine how ERP systems can enable an enterprise to gain or even enhance its competitive advantage (or its competitive advantages). This is done by analyzing Information Systems, especially ERP systems, used by businesses. The analysis is based on Resource based view (RBV) theory and VRIO, which explain under what conditions the competitive advantage of a business can be sustained in order to ensure its sustainability and long-term operation. The combination of these theories with the results of previous researches has led to the development of a new conceptual framework. The proposed theoretical framework was used to analyze empirical data from a case study. The research conducted is qualitative and the method of collecting empirical data is semi-open interviews. The results of the analysis of the findings show under what conditions ERP systems help the business run smoothly and productively, and when they contribute to acquisition of competitive advantage.
