Crisis management in primary school education units
View/ Open
Abstract
The present study aims to investigate, based on teachers’ views, crisis management in primary
schools (crises such as natural disasters, earthquakes, fires, floods, building injuries due to
buildings and technical infrastructure, student violence and students' bullying their classmates).
The purpose of this research study is to highlight the dangers of crisis, to present the level of
crisis prevention measures, to assess the degree of training of teachers in emergencies, and to
examine the provision of psychological support to students in crisis situations.
For this reason, we interviewed teachers in the prefecture of Athens. The results of the survey
revealed that schools are often an accident-prone area, with the major factor causing accidents
being student aggression, a phenomenon that is particularly prevalent in larger schools. The
school's planning for emergencies is limited in the confrontation of earthquakes and fires.
Preventive measures in schools are limited and the school is not completely safe for students.
The school environment is stressful for teachers, and they have requested the support of the
school psychologist in case of crisis. Finally, they have realized incidents of school bullying, a
very serious phenomenon for the climate and the educational process, which was handled by
the teachers’ association.
