It is a fact that the current economic environment is characterized by the intense
competitiveness and speed with which evolves not only technology but also scientific
knowledge. In recent years, large industries of the world's industries have shifted from
manufacturing products to providing services. The technology industry has been a huge part of
this transition. The majority of service design projects focus on innovating large, traditional
services, such as banking and financial services, healthcare, travel, hospitality, distribution
services, government and public services. AI-based services are already a part of daily life,
while progress in both research and development is fast.
This paper first provides a bibliographic overview of the concept of service design at
international level, discusses how it works, as well as the most up-to-date developments. It also
presents the concept of artificial intelligence, its contribution to the service design field, and its
capabilities. An empirical study through a questionnaire follows in order to determine the
current situation and future prospects of the industry in Greece. The relevant results are
analysed and solutions are proposed for the future.
