Generic drugs have an active position in the drug market over the last few years, yet their range of use varies between Greece and other countries abroad. In the last few decades researches over generic drugs show particular interest. Survey results show the progress and growth of the generic industry to reduce pharmaceutical costs. In the European Union, on-patent drugs have been largely replaced by generic drugs over the last forty years, while Greece sets generic drugs as 'drugs in question', based on consumer perceptions. The aim of this master dissertation is to determine the role of generic drugs in Greece. Initially, there is a general introduction into the pharmaceutical industry, analyzing its features and the macroeconomic environment in Greece and other countries of the European Union.
The methods of pharmaceutical pricing and the pharmaceutical expense in the domestic market are analyzed. The factors that affect the attitude of consumers to generic drugs and also the socio-economic role of generic drugs in the Greek market, as compared to other countries in the world, are being investigated. In conclusion, a SWOT analysis is being carried out, presenting the opportunities and threats to the generic drug market environment with regard to generic medicines as well as their competitive advantage. The drawn conclusions show that consumers have been poorly informed by both the media, health professionals and the internet, reinforcing the belief that generic drugs are not as safe, reliable and effectively addressing illness, nevertheless agree that they help reduce Greece's medical costs. Lastly, counter measures are proposed to combat misinformation through awareness campaigns, and tactics for the optimal use of generic medicines.
