In this paper, the basic definitions and concepts of Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) are analyzed and their implications for the host countries and the countries of origin, as well as the factors that favor their realization, are presented. In the second chapter, the FDI outflows of the Greek enterprises over time, including the National Bank of Greece (NBG) Group, are outlined, emphasizing its activity in the Balkans. Moreover, Greece’s relations with the Balkan countries are in which the bank is active, are listed and a brief historical retrospection is made regarding domestic banks' investments in the wider region. The case studies of Romania, Bulgaria and Skopje are then carried out in three consecutive chapters, focusing on the characteristics of their economies, the incentives to invest in them, the presentation of the NBG subsidiaries and the commentary on some of their key economic components from 2012 to 2017. Finally, the conclusions drawn from this study are outlined on the degree of success and effectiveness of the Group's specific investments in the Balkans.
