Studies aimed at investigating the impact of strategic decisions by port operators on the port industry have been significantly increased over the last decade.
The work focuses on the following issues: game theory, modern trends in the ownership of ports, competition and cooperation between ports, among ports and hinterland, port authorities and port operators and port specialization.
Initially, there is a brief presentation of game theory as a tool for developing comparison models of strategic decisions. Then, the objectives, the methods and results of specific studies are analyzed. These results are commented on to draw conclusions on the contribution of game theory to the port industry.
The complexity of the port industry and the large number of parameters involved make necessary to simplify the reality in the construction of models by imposing very restrictive assumptions that eventually alter the consistency of the results. In addition, the results are particularly sensitive to the differences in the environment of the project countries, but also to the modeling techniques used.
However, some conclusions can be drawn, which will be a starting point for developing more sophisticated models.
