This thesis deals with the issue of mergers and cartels that create monopolies and the negative effects that they have on consumers and society.
The theoretical microeconomic analysis proves that when the market tends to monopoly, prices are rising and the social surplus decreases. Nevertheless, mergers can, through economies of scale and synergies, bring benefits that may break even or even overcome their negative effects. For this reason, the various competition committees and antitrust authorities are interested in examining whether a merger can cause positive effects that may outweigh the negative ones. On the other hand, cartels do not have any benefits and they have proved to be harmful for consumers and society, as it stands for quite a few private and public monopolies, especially in the case of Greece, as experience has shown.
The theoretical foundation along with experience in the field of mergers, cartels and various monopolies has shown that large business size is needed, which can offer cost savings, partnerships and development of products with higher quality, but companies that accumulate so much power and they can exert it against consumers and society, should not be created. That’s the reason why the state should intervene and evaluate cases of mergers and it must also break cases of cartels. However, to a certain extent, it is a matter of personal will of businessmen and consumers, where the power of the latter should not be underestimated even by themselves.
