Tourism is a major sector of the service economy at a world level. Alternative forms of tourism are those that will mark a new period of tourism development. Urban Tourism, is one of the many forms, seems to be the core of alternative tourism. In this Master Thesis, it has been developed an application for Android mobile devices, which is a tourist guide to the city of Xanthi and its wider region.
The application, it has been named Tourist Guide of Xanthi. It is a Geolocation System which provides Recommendation Sites (POIs – Points of Interest) Service, and Travel Services. The Recommendation Routes Service is supported via Google Maps app. The Weather Forecasting Service is supported via OpenWeatherMap app. Analyzing the international and Greek applications environment for Mobile Recommender Systems in Tourism for Android Mobile Devices, it is observed that there haven’t been developed functions to following and recording tourist behavior specifically visitor’s location trace in combination with environmental conditions.
The purpose of the application is primary research which is focused specifically on quantitative research. Primary research is conducted by a questionnaire function of the application. The participation to the questionnaire is optional and responses are kept completely anonymous.
The questionnaire is partitioned into two main parts. The first part of the questionnaire generates information about visitors’ socio-demographic characteristics, such as gender, age and place of origin. The second one includes two questions addressing the purpose of visit and the number of travelling companions.
Furthermore, the application recording:
- the visitors’ geolocation
- the environmental temperature
- the environmental humidity.
The data is saved into an external Database, Firebase Google.
