With the evolution of Artificial Intelligence and IoT, many new technologies and applications have presented themselves. Applications such as Smart Homes, Smart Cities and personal digital assistants are steadily paving the way for the future. Their goal is to better our everyday lives and change the way we do things. Big companies have already invested and created several, very well-known assistants such as Alexa of Amazon, Google’s Google Assistant or Apple’s Siri. All of them have entered our lives, and one can find them in almost every house.
The goal of this Thesis is to study the personal digital assistants, their evolution and their capabilities. From Education all the way to Culture, the applicability of digital assistants is seemingly endless, due to the ever-growing technology and artificial intelligence.
In Smart homes, the personal digital assistant controls every device connected to it via the internet or Bluetooth: devices such as Smart TVs, the house’s air-conditioning system and heating, or even the lighting of the house. In Education, new ways of teaching use digital assistants to change the learning process, making it more fun and easier for students to learn. In Museums, digital assistants can be used as means for “communicating” with the exhibits, making it possible to learn an exhibit’s history through the exhibit’s own voice and perspective.
Finally, we will explain how someone can create their own digital personal assistant for their Android devices, based on technologies and tools that are readily available. The assistant, Chatbot can search for and play music from Spotify and videos from YouTube.
