Abstract
The shipping industry plays a very important role for the Greek national economy, for the levels of employment in Greece and for the country's position in the global shipping. The shipping industry has always been a very important factor in the maritime competition and it has also maintained its competitive position internationally. Despite the economic downturns and the interdependence, that the Greek shipping industry had had both with the global and the Greek economic crisis, it had pursued tactics and it had followed strategies that brought the economic recovery to the Greek shipping industry. The current thesis highlights the key position of the Greek shipping industry in the Greek economic structure. Its competitive position is also researched compared to other EU countries as well to some non-EU ones. For the purpose of the current research, the Balassa indicator is used, so that the position of the Greek shipping sector and its dynamics would be underlined in the international business environment.
