In this paper, we study the coastal zone of Attica and more specifically the part of the
Athenian Riviera (from Piraeus to Sounio). The study focuses on the social, economic and
environmental development of the area and our goal is to see whether it conforms with the
principles of Integrated Coastal Zone Management and, if not so, whether it can be
adjusted. The area is holistically studied, as we examine the socio-economic profile of the
area, the possible environmental and economic consequences of the recent wreck of Agia
Zoni II, while at the same time analyzing the opinion of the residents of Attica on coasts,
waters and pollution issues concerning Attica and its marine environment. The survey
about the users’, of the coastal zone, opinion was conducted using a questionnaire and the
data gathered was analyzed with a statistical tool. Meanwhile, we study the development
projects planned in the region as well as the projects that are being executed now and aim
at the transformation of the Athenian Riviera into something completely different from
what we are used to, at the present time. It is indeed interesting to see how all this
information is linked to each other and whether it contributes to the sustainable
development of the Athenian Riviera.
The paper is divided into 6 chapters, with chapter 1 referring to introductory references
and definitions, in order to understand the coastal zone and integrated coastal zone
management, better. In chapter 2, the Greek institutional framework governing the coastal
zone is studied, while in Chapter 3 the Athenian Riviera and all the parts that compose it
are analyzed. In Chapter 4 we make reference to concepts of pollution, we focus on marine
pollution and suggest ways in which to deal with it, while at the same time we contemplate the wreck of Agia Zoni II and its implications. Chapter 5 concerns the survey conducted
with a questionnaire and evaluates the results. Finally, in chapter 6 we present our
conclusions.
