The purpose of this dissertation is to present and highlight the legal framework governing the research and rescue of persons in distress at sea. The relevant legislation found both in an international and national level is presented, a particular emphasis is though given to the International Convention on Maritime Research and Rescue (Hamburg, 1979), by virtue of which an organized international system for the provision and coordination of research and rescue services at sea was established for the first time, as well as the general principles of organization, action and cooperation of coastal States were defined. Given the provision of the Convention for the delimitation of areas of responsibility solely through agreements of the neighboring countries concerned, the problem of the demarcation and establishment of zones of responsibility in the Aegean Sea and the absence of agreement between Greece and Turkey is being analyzed. In order to understand the disputes and demands coming from Turkey with regard to the boundaries of SAR zones, the legal framework governing the international airspace and the delimitation of Flight Information Regions is presented along with the correlative legal framework governing the delimitation of the SAR zones.
