Abstract
The purpose of this assignment is to explore the choises and the applications that can
be used for the implementation of the Renewable Sources of Energy (R.S.E) in the
maritime field. For this purpose, an analysis of secondary data has been made. The
results of this research have proven the lack of a single, universal regulatory and
certifying framework in the use of R.S.E in the maritime industry, and this exact lack
is being covered by private initiatives, that concern certification, evaluation, education
and rewarding efforts towards the (private) companies, employees and the vessels
having adopted the R.S.E. Many maritime companies worldwide hesitate over taking
the step to use them, because of their private interests – being questioned-, due to their
misinformation about them and the lack of practical examples of successful transition
of this kind. However, there are some positive outcomes that concern the adoption of
methods, which will lead to a wider use of the Renewable Sources of Energy in the
maritime field.
On the same wavelength, the tax and financial benefits seem to remain more for those
who choose the old-fashioned fuels (like the HSFO) instead of the ones who adopt the
R.S.E. On the other hand, though, there are examples of companies and vessels that
have started using the R.S.E and showed significant reduction on their (operating)
costs. Furthermore, both the marine industry and the maritime regulating bodies are
offering initiatives (tax exemptions, environmental and ethical awareness etc.) to the
maritime companies worldwide in order to start adopting technologies, related to the
Renewable Sources of Energy.
