The new European environmental legislation (Directives 2010/75 / EU and 2015/2193 / EU) for Large and Medium Combustion Plants, which is already in place, has significant impact on the way electrification of non-interconnected islands will be performed in the upcoming years. In many cases it is necessary to withdraw a large percentage (or all) of the units operating in the non-interconnected islands, or to take additional measures to keep them running. In this context, decisions must be taken immediately to ensure efficient and secure supply of these systems.
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the impact of the Directives on the electricity supply of autonomous island systems, and the study of alternative options for the autonomous development of these systems and / or the interconnection with the mainland power system (or with neighbouring autonomous island systems), by proposing the optimal solution that will also take into account the possibilities of RES utilisation.
In this context, the case of the Milos autonomous system was examined, where, using an energy analysis software, a techno-economic study was carried out simulating the operation of the system under alternative scenarios, with the aim of choosing the most economical one, that at the same time meets technical and environmental constraints.
In the present thesis, the interconnections that have been already carried out are presented, and the existing situation for the whole system of Greece is analysed. Subsequently, the available submarine interconnection technologies are presented and a literature review of the most important studies related to interconnections of autonomous island systems is made. An overview of the available energy analysis software is made and the key elements of the EU directives on emissions are studied. Finally, the techno-economic analysis is presented and its conclusions summarized.
