In this specific graduate project, an attempt is made in order to detect the reasons that led the European banks to attribute in terms of shares and in profitability, remarkedly less in relation to the respective American banks. Initially, the nature of the bank system is being analyzed as well as its risks. Moreover, a statistical comparison of the American and European Banks is presented in order to make the imbalances, which may occur, obvious. Finally, in the empirical study, panel econometric models for the American and European banks are used in order to detect the factors in the inernal environment of the bank which affect its performance. In the models, an analysis for the bank returns takes place as well as for the return on average assets in an effort for the issue to be examined from various angles. The results showed that the extend of the Non performing loans played an important role in the shares performance, so did the banks reserves for their confrontation. Therefore, to a certain extend, as well as the capital adequacy of the banks. Regarding the profitability, factors, which seem to affect, are again the Non performing loans, the percentage of the equity, the deposits well as the level of inflation in both continents.
