Crime is one of the major problems of modern societies. Its correlation with poverty has been and is until now, a controversial issue. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate this relationship, using both classical statistical and spatial analysis methods. For this purpose, data from 32 European regions, of NUTS 2 geographic subdivisions, which are relevant to socio-economic indicators and their demographic characteristics, are being studied. Both the results of statistical and spatial analysis were produced, through R open source code.
Initially, the definitions of crime are approached, with a view to understanding the phenomenon and then linking it, with various parameters that can explain its expansion, in relation to the phenomenon of poverty. Subsequently, theoretical approaches, developed in the context of environmental criminology, are presented, focusing on the study of space, as an important parameter. As follow, all those methods which will be applied in the last and main part of the dissertation are analyzed, on a theoretical level. This includes the presentation of descriptive statistical measures for the variable under consideration, the construction of thematic maps, the investigation of the existence of spatial autocorrelation and the investigation of the existence, of spatial inequalities for the data. Also, interpretive methods of data analysis are developed, both through the application of the multiple regression, and through the application of the geographically weighted regression. The final section, relates to the most important results, in which this research work has ended up, through combining the conclusions, of the methods of analysis applied.
