The notion of logistics appeared in Greece in the early 1990s, but it took long before these methods were fully understood and implemented.
Modern-day logistics as applied in businesses can be traced back to the armed forces, where the use of various weapon systems, as well as their storage and clear distribution, required methods and systems to ensure a detailed recording of inventories and timely distribution of supplies (Pappi, 2006).
Over time, logistics evolved into a science, and its methods experienced exponential development (Bayles, 2001). Moreover, it became increasingly known and comprehensible to the various businesses and industries, which began to develop several key functions.
Stores selling various products have increasingly adopted Logistics and methods for ensuring that their inventories are properly and accurately recorded. At the same time, however, logistics enable them to offer reliable services to customers at their stores, small or large. The function of the Supply Chain Management that is responsible for the efficient and regular flow and storage of goods and services in a given business is called Logistics. From the time when the goods or services and information arrive at the storage area and until they are consumed, the logistics process is carried out, which has as its primary objective the satisfaction of consumers.
A statement which is referring to the above function and to the purpose of logistics is very important. An important aspect of logistics is third party logistics.
It is of course necessary for store managers making use of logistics that, over time, the services offered to consumers have to be as high-quality as possible, in order to ensure competitiveness. They should therefore be aware of the fact that third party logistics is relevant for two sectors, as follows (ICAP Third Party? Logistics Survey for 2013): - Businesses, which aim for maximum customer and consumer satisfaction and therefore need (Bayles, 2001):
• Good organization
• Internal distribution
• Outflow of their goods
- The supply chain industry, i.e. the companies that ensure that the goods of the abovementioned businesses reach consumers through the processing of raw materials. The organization and flow of goods is essential at this stage.
The underlying cause of the above?? is that competition and the economy have expanded. Competition is collective? Thus, in order to be and be seen as competitive, firms must be dynamically established and have a strong presence in the market in which they are active. It is essential, of course, than any logistics issues are taken seriously into account and addressed. There are, of course, some specific functions that help to form the right channels of distribution of goods (Apostolou, 2012).
