This paper is a master thesis on the Russian grand strategy and the important role of energy in it. We will refer to the Sovereign Wealth Funds and how they affect the international financial system, having a significant impact on geopolitics as well. By studying the largest energy company in the world, GAZPROM, we will see that it operates not only as a profitable business, but also as a means of promoting national interests, as well as a leverage for achieving Russia's foreign policy goals.
Vladimir Putin, with his rise to power, made it clear that Russia is claiming a dominant position in the international system. The country's efforts are focused on energy diplomacy, which has direct consequences regarding economic and political relations.
The purpose of the study is to show how Russia, being the world's largest natural gas supplier, exploits its wealthy natural resources in order to achieve its foreign policy goals, how Vladimir Putin achieves his stay in power through state capitalism, and whether this policy will continue to thrive in the long run.
