In this study we examine the determinants of banks’ regulatory capital such as macroeconomic conditions, balance sheet structure, business model of banks, and institutional framework using data from Datastream and Eurostat. The data are annual and relate to the period 2000 to 2015. In addition, we examine how the financial crisis affected the regulatory capital. To examine the relationship between the dependent and independent variables, we use a Least squares regression in two dimensions, a cross-sectional and a time-series.
The results of this study indicate that both profitability and risk of the banks have a positive correlation with regulatory capital. Also, showed that the size, the market to book value and business model have a negative correlation with regulatory capital. Including the dummy variable of the crisis in our model, the regulatory capital showed strong and positive correlation with the size and regulatory quality. With the onset of the crisis, large banks were forced to hold higher levels of capital as imposed by supervisors. The banks of the developing states obey the rules and therefore hold more capital as the authorities require.
