The Great Idea was a growing national vision since the times of the fall of the Byzantine Empire among the Greek populations. The creation of the modern Greek state, thanks to the liberation through the Revolution of 1821 of a small, in the beginning, part of the historically Greek lands, gave the basis for its transformation into a clear political narrative. In this paper, the history of the instrumental use of the Great Idea is being developed, both in the long period from the Ottoman domination to the "unfortunate" Greek-Turkish war and during the basic study period, between the aforementioned war and the Movement in Goudi. The extensive analysis of the use of the Great Idea by the political powers in the development of Grand Strategies leads to a basic separation of the ways of this use between the small-scale exploitation of the Great Idea as a legitimization tool for various political decisions and its recognition as a pillar of the National Strategy, around which individual state policies were built.
