Project management is an independent function in a business since the mid-20th century. It is a scientific discipline that has been increasingly investigated by both academics and practitioners the last decades. At this point, it should be highlighted that for the proper management of projects an essential prerequisite is the proper management of their risks. There is not exist proper project management without including the management of its potential risks. However, risk management is considered as the most difficult area of project management as various challenges are encountered during a project. These challenges are further intensified in construction projects due to their complexity and also to the many parties involved in a technical project. Thus, risk management in engineering and construction projects is regarded as necessary. An effective management seeks both to reduce the uncertainty and the likelihood of occurrence of risks, to reduce their negative impact and also to exploit any opportunities that may arise.
This thesis focuses on the presentation and analysis of project management and especially of risk management in technical projects as well as the relationship between the various types of risks and their management.
The first chapter gives the definition of the project, its basic characteristics and also defines the project management and the areas of its knowledge.
The second chapter presents the risk and the 4 essential stages of its management, which are the identification, analysis, handling and monitoring.
The third chapter focuses on the definition of a technical project and on its group, consisting of professionals from different branches, and its good functioning contributes dramatically to the completion of the project. Finally, in this chapter the various risks of technical projects and their management, which follows the same philosophy and phases as the general risk management, are also analyzed.
The fourth chapter presents the methodology and the strategy followed in this research and also includes the description of the research ample and the analysis of the findings.
Finally, the fifth chapter reports the findings of this research and provides suggestions for future research.
