Abstract
The purpose of this study, initially, is to understand all the steps in the process of integrating a seafarer into a shipping company. The primary objective is to recognize the specificity of this profession due to the ‘non-stationary’ nature of it. We need to understand the kind of requirements and characteristics the employees of crewing department should fulfil, since it is the most responsible department which introduce the seaman to the shipping company and generally is the department which should handle properly the whole fleet/personnel of all ships. Part of this process is the proper check of the mandatory and optional certificates that a
Candidate must hold. At the same time, additional training should be provided to seafarers,
based on the specific needs and statutes of the company. We will also analyse the usual process of travelling from and to the ship until seafarer’s repatriation. But we should also mention to this study, the importance of evaluation procedure because its appropriate factor for seaman’s career, the reputation of the company, the quality of good services on board the ship etc.
Afterwards, we will move from theory to practice by using the 'case study' shipping company, which manages 60 ships within 2 years. Examples are the special tools used by the crew for the most appropriate recruiting of seafarers, as the seamen who are entering the company are unknown, something that maximizes the responsibility for a good pre-recruitment process.
