The phenomenon of piracy is one of the most topical issues that concern the
shipping industry at a global level. The rapid increase of piracy in geographical
locations of high importance for maritime transport over the past two decades has
been a benchmark for industry professionals, creating a new barrier to
its implementation and execution. As shipping companies try to protect their assets
but also the interests of their clients, they carry out various kinds of actions and moves
to avoid pirate incidents on their ships.
Irrespective of the type or deadweight of the vessel, pirate incidents tend to
focus on specific location around the globe, thus allowing companies to take
additional measures to protect their crew, cargo and vessels.
Within the present essay, an attempt has been made to present the
phenomenon of piracy and the anti-piracy measures that companies may undertake, in
order not to limit and possibly nullify their vulnerabilities to attacks and attempts to
capture their ships.
