Natural gas accounts for roughly a quarter of global energy demand, of which 9,8% is supplied as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). Globally, domestic production and pipeline trade still account for the majority of gas supplies, at 70,6% and 19,6% of the total, respectively. Maritime transport holds a vast share of the total LNG distribution. Pipeline distribution is the most efficient and economical means of natural gas transportation. Due to large distances between supply and consumers and geopolitical circumstances, it is not always feasible to use pipelines for LNG distribution. Maritime transportation comes to play an important role in these cases, gaining an always more significant role in the expanding LNG market.
The dissertation studies issues related to the global LNG market and the parameters that form the entire LNG supply chain. The aim of this dissertation is to examine and present the tendencies of the LNG market, by analyzing every economical, political and technical factor that can affect those tendencies. Finally, the LNG importation and exportation ports are presented alongwith the most important terminals.
