This thesis constitutes a literature review concerning not only the issue of marine casualties and their environmental consequences but also the way prevention and correction measures affect shipping companies and the marine insurance sector. The goal of this thesis is to study the function of P&I Clubs and their connection with marine casualties as well as the main international conventions concerning marine accidents and the way they affect shipping companies.
The first chapter elaborates the necessary information - data about marine accidents like their causes, their consequences on the environment and the reason why international organizations place emphasis on accidental pollution and put other pollution sources aside. The second chapter mentions and analyzes one of the main causes of marine casualties- that is Flags of Convenience.
The third chapter, which is the most extended one, studies the main international conventions which either try to prevent or correct the environmental pollution as a result of marine casualties. The forth chapter is about Port State Control and Classification Societies - IACS and how they are related to marine accidents. The fifth chapter explains the reason why marine accidents are mostly covered by P&I Clubs and how they try to estimate their income in order to compensate a possible accident. In conclusion, the purpose of the sixth chapter is to study the way prevention measures, imposed by the international organizations in order to prevent marine casualties from happening, affect the operation of a shipping company.
