The relationship between financial innovation and economic growth has been the main subject of studying for many researchers. The literature suggests that financial innovation is related to economic growth, which may be positive or negative. Typically, economic innovation has a good and a dark side that affects growth respectively. In this study, we try to examine the direct impact of financial innovation on the economic development of the most developed countries. Initially, economic growth was measured on the basis of the annual growth rate of real GDP per capita, and financial innovation was measured by the volume of loans to the private sector as a percentage of GDP. These figures were obtained from the most developed countries that make up the so-called G7 (US, Canada, Japan, UK, Germany, France, Italy) for the period 1990-2015, on an annual basis. From the study of the above sample, a negative direct impact of financial innovation on economic growth, which is realized through borrowing, emerged in general. As the sample includes years before the financial crisis of 2008 and years during this crisis, it is interesting to consider how the crisis interacts with financial innovation in economic growth. Key
