In spite of technological progress and modern methods, the transport of both cargo and passengers by sea, remains an activity that involves risks. The operational or accidental discharge of oil from ships can result in a number of environmental impacts in the coastal zone. Many incidents occur every year, making the economic cost of shipping activity enormous, in an environment where the density of maritime traffic is increasing.
This paper deals with the impact of oil transport on the Mediterranean Sea and the existing institutional framework. It begins with an introduction that gives general data on maritime transport. Initially reference is made to oil, giving general information about it and then to sources of marine pollution. The next chapter looks at the effects of oil transport, while the fifth chapter presents the institutional framework governing maritime transport at global and European level. The last chapter focuses on the issue of green ships and innovative technologies. The thesis concludes with conclusions resulting from the analysis of the above issues.
