The current post-graduate thesis is referred to the issue of the European Union's maritime safety policies and their importance for the competitiveness of European Shipping from the perspective of ever-increasing competition from third countries. The issue of safety for the European Union and its members is of great importance, for that reason the EU institutions as well as stakeholders' representatives (shipowners, shippers, naval workers, etc.) are looking for European policies with enhanced Safety standards which will take into account the international nature of shipping activity and the costs it generates. These policies should achieve regulation, while avoiding distortion of competition. The purpose of this thesis is the study of the factors that led to the establishment and operation of maritime safety, the main policy axes of the EU, as well as the problem of unfair competition and the EU's strategy of free movement and implementation Competition rules. Finally, we will report on and assess the regulatory developments at international level, their impact on European Union shipping as well as whether there are prospective improvements to the current situation.
